Final Installment of Winter Dodgeball '09
Getting to the top is easy. It's staying there that's the hard part.
But that's exactly where the semi-competitve amatuer dodgeball team "I'd Still Rather Not Say" will stay until next season, as they completed an improbable come from behind victory to win their second consecutive zogports title.
"Never a doubt," yelled player manager Tom O'Connor as he walked off the court just seconds after the clinching match, the look of relief on his face a drastic contrast to the look he displayed just 30 minutes earlier. "After game 1, we had our work cut out for us in a tough environment, but as usual, we pulled together just in time."
It looked like an early upset in the making as ISRNS got off to a slow start, dropping a hard fought game 7-4 against the super talented white team. Facing this early deficit, ISRNS would flip the aggro switch, as they put on an absolute clinic in game 2 against the grey team. "That's what we call an ass whoppin'," said Brad Esarey moments after the 21-0 blowout.
The white team would win their 2nd and 3rd match, putting them at 3-0 on the night, with ISRNS sitting at 1-1 going into their rematch with the white team. "It's now or never" said 2008 female MVP Michelle "Blazer" Suesens, "let's just do what we always do----dominate." Almost on cue, ISRNS would jump out to a quick 5-0 lead, as newcomers Ernie "Bert" Burrell and "Iron" Wes Peckenpaugh would follow the lead of the always dependable Jared Awesome and Ismail Khair, with a flurry of kills in the early going. Seven minutes later ISRNS finished off an 11-2 victory in game 3, setting up a rematch with the grey team with the title on the line.
Tom O'Connor would quickly pull his team together for a huddle for a few words before this final match. Despite sounding like a Gatorade commercial, O'Connor rallied his troops, loudly declaring, "This is what we've been waiting for all season. This game. Right now. Whatda we got left?"
The game was over before it started...
"Our big boys were in the zone in that last game," said Randi "Wildcard" Pedlow, "Brad and Tommy just took over the gym at that point. They were, for lack of a better word, unstoppable." Final score of game four: 11-4, ISRNS wins again, clinching not only the title, but a champions matchup with the lower division champion Kiwi team. Ten minutes of free wheeling dodgeball later, the Kiwi team had been humbled by the ISRNS juggernaut, 17-4.
So remember Brad Esarey, and his absolute cannon of an arm, for it often struck fear into the hearts of opponents.
Remember Kristina Graeber, the female MVP for 2009, time and time again her throws showed why the females can make or break a game.
Remember Ismail Khair, whose quiet confidence rubbed off on his teammates, as he always found a way to make a critical catch when his team needed it the most.
Remember Sonya Rook, who refused to back down from anyone, no matter how big, fast, or hard the other team came after her, she stood her ground, and the league took notice.
Remember Jared Awesome, as he always found an interesting way to get into the heads of the other team without being a total dick.
Remember Wes P, and Ernie B, the newcomers who provided a much needed jolt of energy when the team needed it most, while providing depth to an already loaded team.
Remember "Wildcard" Pedlow and her partner in crime Michelle "Blazer", for this tandem often survived longer than anyone on the team, often wearing down the other team simply by dodging everything that came their way.
Remember Fuller, Alice, and Josh “El Bandito.” While they couldn't make the final game, their contributions in helping the team get to the playoffs is immeasurable.
Remember Sam The Ref for taking our side on close calls, they do add up in the end.
Remember Tom "Ace" O'Connor, your captain, for leading by example all along.
Remember it all, savor every moment of this sweet victory. After all, you earned it.
When asked about his team’s plan for the off-season, on what they could possibly do to top this 47-9 run over 2 seasons, O’Connor flashed a brief smile and replied, “I’d still rather not say…”
